Can Pizza Boxes Be Recycled in Canada?

Can Pizza Boxes Be Recycled in Canada?

Price Group |

Pizza boxes are often recyclable in Canada when they are empty and reasonably clean. However, a heavily soiled box may not belong in the recycling stream, and disposal rules can differ by province, municipality and collection provider.

The safest answer is:

Clean pizza boxes are commonly accepted for recycling. Boxes with substantial grease, cheese, sauce or food residue may need to go into an organics or garbage stream, depending on local rules.

Restaurants should avoid making one universal disposal claim to every customer across Canada.

Why Are Pizza Boxes Recyclable?

Most pizza boxes are manufactured from corrugated paperboard. Clean corrugated fibre can be collected, processed and used in the production of new paper-based materials.

The challenge is not necessarily the box itself. The challenge is food contamination.

Cheese, sauce, oil and leftover food can reduce the quality of collected paper and create contamination in a recycling system. A small grease spot may be accepted in some programs, while a heavily soiled bottom panel may require different disposal.

Are Greasy Pizza Boxes Recyclable?

It depends on the amount of grease and the local program.

A box with only a few light grease spots may still be accepted by some recycling systems. A box covered with oil, cheese, sauce or food pieces is less likely to be suitable for paper recycling.

For example:

  • Ontario’s current recycling guidance lists pizza boxes among accepted cardboard boxes and asks residents to flatten cardboard. It also directs residents to follow community-specific preparation instructions.
  • Recycle BC says pizza boxes can be recycled with paper when they are empty, not heavily soiled and do not contain significant amounts of cheese or sauce.
  • The City of Calgary directs clean boxes and boxes with some grease to recycling, while dirty boxes with significant food residue go into the green cart for composting.

These examples demonstrate why customers should check their own local waste program rather than relying on a general statement printed for the entire country.

What Should Customers Do With a Used Pizza Box?

A practical disposal process is:

  1. Remove leftover pizza, crusts, dipping cups and plastic pizza savers.
  2. Check the box for cheese, sauce and heavy grease.
  3. If the box is accepted and sufficiently clean, flatten it for recycling.
  4. If only one section is heavily soiled, check whether the clean section can be separated and recycled.
  5. Place the dirty section into organics or garbage according to local instructions.
  6. Keep the box dry until collection.

Customers should use their municipal waste-search tool when uncertain.

Can You Separate the Clean Lid From the Dirty Bottom?

In some areas, separating the box can help recover clean cardboard.

If the lid is clean but the bottom is heavily soiled, a customer may be able to tear off the lid and place it with recyclable cardboard. The dirty portion should then follow local organics or garbage instructions.

This approach only applies where the local program accepts the separated materials. It is not a substitute for checking municipal requirements.

Should Pizza Boxes Go in the Green Bin?

Some Canadian municipalities accept food-soiled paperboard in an organics or green-bin program, while others do not. Commercial organics collection may also follow different rules from residential collection.

For example, Calgary directs dirty pizza boxes and pizza box liners to its green cart. Toronto’s published waste guidance places used or soiled pizza boxes with Green Bin organics. Requirements can change, so restaurants and customers should consult the current local program.

Businesses using private waste collection should ask their provider what materials are accepted.

Does a Kraft Box Recycle Better Than a White Box?

Box colour alone does not determine recyclability.

Both kraft and white corrugated pizza boxes may be recyclable when accepted locally and sufficiently free from food residue. Other factors can include:

  • Coatings
  • Liners
  • Attached plastic components
  • Adhesives
  • Printing
  • Food contamination
  • Local processing capabilities

Restaurants should not label a box “recyclable everywhere” unless that claim can be properly supported.

Are Waxed or Coated Pizza Boxes Recyclable?

Coatings and material combinations may affect whether a box is accepted. A box that looks like ordinary paperboard may include treatments designed to resist moisture or grease.

Check the manufacturer’s specifications and local recycling instructions. If you cannot confirm the material, avoid making broad recyclability or compostability claims.

“Biodegradable,” “compostable” and “recyclable” do not mean the same thing.

How Restaurants Can Reduce Contamination

Restaurants can make pizza boxes easier to sort and manage by:

  • Preventing sauce and cheese from spilling during packing
  • Using an appropriate food-contact liner when suitable
  • Avoiding unnecessary mixed-material attachments
  • Training staff to close boxes correctly
  • Keeping unused boxes clean and dry
  • Providing accurate, location-appropriate disposal guidance
  • Avoiding unsupported environmental claims

The right box size also helps. An oversized box allows more movement, which can cause toppings and sauce to contact the paperboard.

Suggested Customer-Facing Message

For restaurants serving customers in multiple communities, use careful wording such as:

Please remove all food and check your local recycling or organics guidelines before disposing of this pizza box.

This is more accurate than guaranteeing that every box can go into every Canadian recycling bin.

Choosing Pizza Boxes for Your Restaurant

Recyclability is one consideration, but restaurants should also evaluate size, strength, moisture performance, case quantity and delivery requirements.
