Choosing the correct cake box protects the cake, improves presentation and makes transportation easier.
A box that is too small can damage icing and decorations. A box that is too large can allow the cake board to slide during delivery. The right cake box should provide enough room for the cake and its decorations without leaving excessive empty space.
This guide explains how to measure a cake, match it to a cake board and choose the right box dimensions.
Start With the Cake Board
The cake box normally needs to fit the cake board, not only the cake itself. For example, an 8-inch cake may be placed on a 10-inch cake board. In that situation, a 10-inch box is usually required.
A good rule is: cake box width and length should match the cake board dimensions or be slightly larger. For round cakes, square boxes are normally used.
Example: cake diameter 8 inches, cake board 10 inches, recommended box 10 x 10 inches. Always measure the actual board before ordering packaging.
Measure Three Dimensions
Cake boxes should be selected by length, width and height. A listing such as 10 x 10 x 5 inches generally means a 10-inch length, 10-inch width and 5-inch height.
The height is especially important for cakes with tall layers, piped borders, fruit toppings, cake toppers, fondant decorations, floral decorations or drip icing.
Standard Cake Box Sizing Examples
The following are general examples. The final size depends on the cake board and decorations.
| Cake Size | Typical Board Size | Suggested Box |
|---|---|---|
| 6-inch cake | 8-inch board | 8 x 8 box |
| 8-inch cake | 10-inch board | 10 x 10 box |
| 10-inch cake | 12-inch board | 12 x 12 box |
| 12-inch cake | 14-inch board | 14 x 14 box |
| 14-inch cake | 16-inch board | 16 x 16 box |
Some bakers use a board that is two inches larger than the cake. Others use a larger board when additional decoration is required.
How Much Extra Space Is Needed?
The cake should not touch the walls of the box. Allow enough space for icing borders, side decorations, cake board tabs, fingers when lifting the cake and minor movement during packaging. However, avoid using a box that is several inches larger than the board unless the cake is secured. Too much empty space can allow the cake board to move during transport.
Choosing the Correct Box Height
Standard Cakes
A standard box height may work for single-layer cakes and basic celebration cakes.
Tall Cakes
Tall cakes may require extra-high cake boxes, adjustable-height cake boxes, extension lids, two-piece boxes or tall corrugated cake boxes. Measure from the bottom of the cake board to the highest decoration, and add a small amount of clearance so the top of the cake does not touch the lid.
Cakes With Toppers
Consider whether the topper will stay on during transportation, be packed separately or extend above the normal box height. When possible, delicate toppers should be installed after delivery.
Round Cake vs Square Cake
Round Cakes
Round cakes are usually packaged in square boxes because square boxes are easier to manufacture, stack and carry. Select the box based on the cake board diameter.
Square Cakes
Square cakes require additional attention because the corners of the cake and board are closer to the box walls. Measure the board carefully and avoid forcing it into a box with the same nominal dimensions if the fit is too tight.
Rectangular Cakes
Rectangular cakes, sheet cakes and slab cakes require boxes that match the full cake board dimensions. Common applications include birthday cakes, corporate cakes, school event cakes, catering desserts and large celebration cakes.
Cake Box Styles
One-Piece Cake Boxes
One-piece boxes fold into shape from a single piece of paperboard. They are easy to store flat, common in bakeries, suitable for many standard cakes and available in multiple sizes and colours.
Two-Piece Cake Boxes
Two-piece boxes have a separate lid and base. They can be easier to use with heavy cakes, tall cakes, decorated cakes and cakes that are difficult to lower into a standard box.
Window Cake Boxes
Window cake boxes allow customers to see the product without opening the package. They are suitable for display shelves, premium bakery orders, cupcakes, pastries and decorated cakes. The window should not press against tall icing or decorations.
Corrugated Cake Boxes
Corrugated boxes provide more rigidity than lightweight paperboard. They may be appropriate for large cakes, heavy cakes, delivery orders, multi-layer cakes and long-distance transportation.
White vs Kraft Cake Boxes
White Cake Boxes
White boxes provide a clean, classic bakery appearance. They are often used for wedding cakes, birthday cakes, premium bakery products, custom labels and branded stickers.
Kraft Cake Boxes
Kraft boxes offer a natural appearance and are popular with bakeries that prefer rustic or environmentally focused branding. They pair well with natural paper labels, twine, minimal branding and artisan bakery products.
Choosing Boxes for Cupcakes
Cupcake packaging should be selected based on number of cupcakes, cupcake diameter, height of icing, insert configuration, window or non-window design and transportation requirements. Common capacities include 1, 2, 4, 6, 12 and 24 cupcakes. Cupcake inserts help prevent movement and reduce contact between decorated tops.
Transportation Tips
Even the correct box size cannot fully protect a cake if the box is transported incorrectly. For safer transportation: use a flat, rigid cake board; keep the box level; place a non-slip mat under the box; avoid placing the cake on a vehicle seat; keep the vehicle cool; avoid sudden stops and sharp turns; and secure oversized boxes when necessary.
Cake Box Buying Checklist
Before ordering, confirm cake diameter or dimensions, cake board dimensions, total cake height, decoration clearance, box style, box colour, window preference, required strength, quantity per case and available storage space.
